Happy Anniversary Italy! On March 17th, Italy celebrated the 150th anniversary of its unification. The streets were absolutely packed here in Florence and the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), the town hall, was decked out to reflect the day. Flags were flying everywhere and many activities were planned around the city.
Leading up to the celebration on the night of the 16th, there was a band marching, (the Sound Street Band of Florence) through the Piazza del Duomo and even Florence’s Mayor was on hand to enjoy. They were really great and playing songs I had performed back in my high school marching days. They base themselves on the American marching and New Orleans style bands. Talk about a flashback, right in front of the Duomo! :-0
Anyway, it was a fun, crazy and exciting day, as tourists and Italians alike were out in force celebrating and taking in the beauty of the city!
